Whether you’re preparing shipments for local delivery or international transport, following best practices for container loading will prevent damage, avoid delays, and protect the safety of workers and goods. Here are six best practices we follow.
- Plan the Load. Effective container loading begins with careful planning. Before placing any goods inside the container, determine the best way to organize the items. The size, weight, and fragility of each piece will affect where they are placed. A well-planned load will also help distribute weight evenly.
- Use Proper Packing Materials. Cushioning materials like foam and airbags help fill any gaps and keep items from shifting during transit. Pallets should be wrapped securely with shrink wrap or straps to avoid movement. Additionally, make sure fragile items are properly padded and heavier goods are placed at the bottom of the container.
- Secure the Load. Once the container is packed, it’s essential to secure the load to prevent it from shifting. We use straps, nets, or tie-downs to anchor larger items and make sure nothing is loose inside the container. Shifting loads are a common cause of damage during transport.
- Train Workers on Safe Loading Practices. We make sure all workers involved in the loading process are trained in safe loading techniques. This includes knowing how to lift heavy items properly, how to secure freight effectively, and how to use equipment like forklifts and pallet jacks safely. A knowledgeable team reduces the risk of injury and helps ensure the job is done efficiently.
